8 Effective Antibiotic Medicines for Treating Bacterial Pneumonia in Pets

An antibiotic is a type of medication that’s used to fight bacteria. These are widely available, and you can get them from your vet or the drugstore. Pneumonia is an infection in one or both lungs caused by bacteria or viruses. Attending to it immediately is essential because pneumonia can be severe and lead to other health problems if left untreated. These could result in lung failure and then death eventually. So here are some antibiotics that work well against bacterial pneumonia for your pets and their treatment:

Bactrim

Bactrim DS is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat many bacterial infections. It is an oral medication, meaning you can give it directly to your pet with food or water. Commonly used for skin infections, it can also provide Bactrim DS for pneumonia, otitis media, and urinary tract infections. It may also be used as a single dose or as prolonged treatment over several days.

The most common side effects associated with Bactrim DS include vomiting and diarrhea, which should resolve within one to two days after drug administration. Allergic reactions are rare but may occur if your pet has been exposed to this antibiotic. These usually develop within 12 hours after administration but may appear up to 72 hours later.

Orbactiv

Orbactiv is a prescription antibiotic for treating bacterial pneumonia in dogs and cats. The drug belongs to a class of medications called lipoglycopeptides and works by slowing the growth of bacteria. It would help if you used it for pets with bacterial pneumonia, but not for viral infections like kennel cough, etc.

Orbactiv blocks bacterial cell wall synthesis, the process by which bacteria grow by preventing the assembly of lipid A. It is an essential component of their cell membranes. As a result, it decreases cell membrane permeability, inhibiting pathogens from entering your pet’s bloodstream during an active infection.

Cephalexin

Cephalexin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in pets. It works by killing the bacteria causing your pet’s symptoms, relieving his illness, and allowing him to feel better.

Cephalexin for dogs and cats comes in tablets or capsules that can be taken once daily, with food if possible. Give medication for at least five days; it may need to be continued for up to 10 days if your pet has a severe infection or if the condition is recurrent. Cephalexin is not usually prescribed for dogs under six months old because their immune systems aren’t yet fully developed. However, older dogs may receive this medication safely and effectively if they are not pregnant or nursing mothers.

The most common side effects of cephalexin include diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and nausea. It may also cause decreased urination frequency, inflammation, and weakness.

Marbocyl P

Marbocyl P Tablets is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial pneumonia in cats and dogs. This medication may also treat other conditions as determined by your veterinarian. Do not use this product in animals hypersensitive to benzylpenicillin, beta-lactam antibiotics, and porphyria.

Additionally, use caution while treating pets with hepatic, renal, and hypoprothrombinemia conditions caused by warfarin medication.

Also, be aware of chronic gastrointestinal conditions such as colitis and respiratory infections, including asthma. In addition, large doses may cause superinfection of the urinary tract; thus, giving accurate doses is vital.

Animax

Animax Ointment is used for the treatment of bacterial pneumonia in dogs. It can also treat skin and ear infections. The ointment reduces inflammation, swelling, and redness in your pet’s nose, throat, and lungs. It works by slowing down the production of white blood cells (WBCs) that cause tissue damage due to infection while reducing the pain.

To apply Animax Ointment correctly:

  • Open the lid on top of the tube to break through a seal on the bottom edge; do not remove any foil covering first.
  • Squeeze enough ointment onto your finger or thumb pad to make a small ball about 1/4 inch in diameter. Do not use more than this amount on each application.
  • Gently rub into affected areas once daily until symptoms clear up completely. Keep away from eyes or mucous membranes because they may be harmful if absorbed.

Vibramycin

Vibramycin is a tetracycline antibiotic used in people since the 1960s and is also available as an animal product. It can use to treat a wide variety of infections in dogs and cats. In addition, Vibramycin may be used if other antibiotics have failed to work or if your pet needs additional treatment for a disease.

Vibramycin is beneficial for treating severe bacterial infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections (UTIs), skin infections, and respiratory tract infections (RTIs). Can also prescribe the medication where there’s evidence that bacteria are present, but testing hasn’t yet confirmed the kind of bacterial strain. You should also note how severe the infection might be as we don’t know whether there’s an underlying cause but suspect it could be due to bacteria having entered through wounds.

Cefzil

Cefzil is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections as well. It is also used to treat skin infections in dogs and cats. Cefzil belongs to a group of medicines called cephalosporins, which are a type of penicillin-like antibiotics.

Cefprozil tablets and suspension are used to treat certain bacterial infections in animals. Conditions such as pneumonia (lung infection), skin infections caused by Staphylococcus spp, and Mycoplasma felis can also be treated.

Zyvox

Linezolid is an antibiotic, which means that it fights bacteria. It’s a broad-spectrum antibiotic that can be used to treat bacterial infections, including some types of pneumonia. Linezolid works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It does this by preventing the production of proteins needed for survival and reproduction.

Linezolid can treat infections in the lungs, intestines, and urinary system caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis (S epi), Streptococcus pneumonia (S pneumo), and Mycoplasma species.

Antibiotics Are a Must-Have Medication

These are some of the most commonly used medications that you can use to treat bacterial pneumonia in your pet. Antibiotics work by stopping the growth of bacteria in the body, which helps to reduce symptoms such as inflammation, fever, or pain. They also prevent complications in severe conditions such as sepsis or blood poisoning.

You should use antibiotics only if a vet has recommended them after assessing your pet’s essentials to ensure they suit your needs. Vets also assure these should not cause any unwanted side effects on top of what you’re looking to treat in the first place. Thus, if you’re unsure which one to choose by yourself, consult your vet and ask for their advice.
